Phrasal Verb – S

Save

save on means to spend less than normal (e.g. Keep your showers short to save on water and electricity bills. 
save up or save something up means to keep something (money) for the future use (e.g. Jon’s saving up to buy a new car. He's saving up for a new car. I’m saving my holidays up for a trip round the world.)

See

see off means go to the airport or station to say goodbye, or chase somebody away (e.g. The dogs will soon see off any burglars. We went to the airport to see the daughter off.)

Send

send back means to return something to the person (e.g. I had to send the letter back because it was a wrong address.)

Set

set off means to start on a journey, or ring an alarm, or explode a bomb (e.g. We set off very early to avoid the traffic. The smoke alarm set the fire off.)

set up means start a company, or prepare or arrange something, trick, trap (e.g. The Double Click has been set up in 2015, floated it a couple of years and made a fortune. The government has agreed to set up a committee to investigate the problem. The police set up the car accident by using a CCTVs.)

Shop

shop around means look around and compare price (e.g. You should always shop around before you decide on something for the best deal.)

Show

show off means try something to attract attention or admiration people (e.g. Look at that car! She only bought that sports car to show off.)

show up (or turn up) means to attend or appear, or become clear (e.g. We were expected 100 to come, but very few showed up at the meeting.)

Shut

shut down (or close down) means stop doing business, or turn a computer off (e.g. The company shut down when new technology comes.)

Sit

sit down/ bend down/ lie down means to move body on a seat or on the ground (e.g. I sat down on the ground rather than on a sofa.)

Sleep

sleep over means stay to sleep somewhere for the night (e.g. You should sleep over tonight after the party.)

Sleep

slow down means go more slowly, or less active (e.g. You're driving too fast. Slow down. It’s important to slow down and take rest.)

Sort

sort something out means find a solution to, resolve a problem, or put in order (e.g. There are a few problems including tax problems we need to sort out.)

Split

split up (or break up) means separate, end their relationship or marriage (e.g. Tom split up with his family last year. The company split the sales up into two department.)

Stand

stand up means to be in an upright position from a sitting or lying down (e.g. We stood up when the judge entered the court.)

Stay

stay up means to go to bed later than usual, or moved down to a lower division (e.g. The children stayed up to watch a sport game. Stay up to speed on the latest Brexit developments.)

Stick

stick to something means continue doing something, restrict or limit and not change (e.g. We'd better stick to the original plan, because others are not verified yet. We will be at the beach this summer if you stick to the diet.)

Switch

switch something on/ off means start/ stop the energy flow (e.g. We heard the news as soon as we switched on TV, and switch it off immediately.)
