A. Approximate periods of time

1. At this rate it’ll take weeks to finish the projects (= it will take too long).
2. He’s been doing the same job for years and years (= a very long time).
3. You’re late. I’ve been waiting (for) ages!
4. I’ve had these books for quite a while.
5. Will the builders be here long? Yes, they only started a short time ago.
6. She’ll be here in a second/ moment/ minute.
7. Would you mind waiting a minute? I’ll be with you presently/ shortly.

B. Periods of time in the past and present

1. Punk music was popular in the last 1970s and early 80s.
2. Our house was built in the mid-sixties.
3. The hospital dates from the turn of the century (= the beginning of the century).
4. Electric lights were invented near the end of the nineteenth century.
5. Greek civilization was one of the most important in ancient times.
6. Medical science has developed enormously in modern times.
7. I love to hear Grandpa talk about the old days (= the time when he was young).
8. In those days it was very difficult to travel across Africa.
9. Everyone seems to be on the Internet nowadays/ these days.
10. I’m really busy with work at the moment.
