Relationships

A. People who are not married
1. Friend: boyfriend, girlfriend
2. Couple: having a romantic relationship
3. Partner: living together
4. Lover: can be used by people in romantic relationships
5. Engage: formally agreed to marry, fiancé (male) and fiancée (female)
6. A single partner or single mother/ father or lone partner: someone who has a child but does not live with a husband, wife or partner.

B. People who are married
1. Couple: two people who are married
2. Spouse: In formal or legal contexts, a person’s husband or wife

C. If a relationship ends
1. Widow (female) or widower (male): If someone’s husband or wife has died, and the dead person is referred to as their late husband/ wife.
2. Broken up/ split up: If a relationship ends.
3. Ex-boyfriend/ ex-girlfriend: previous partner. If you were married to them, they are your ex-husband or ex-wife.
4. Separate: stop living together
5. Trial separation: a period of separation to find out if the couple want to separate permanently.
6. Divorce: end their marriage through a legal process

D. New Marriage
1. Stepmother or stepfather: If one of your parents marries again and you become a stepson or stepdaughter.
2. Stepbrother or stepsister: If your stepmother or stepfather already has children.
3. Half-brother or half-sister: If one of your parents has another child with a new husband or wife, this is your half-brother or half-sister.
