Phrasal Verb: put away, put down, put off

put (something) away means put it in the place where it is kept, usually out of sight (e.g. When the children had finished playing with their toys, they put them away)
put somebody down means insult, make somebody feel stupid (e.g. (e.g. I stopped writing and put down my pen.)
put something down means put what you are holding on a surface or floor (e.g. You can put the groceries down on the kitchen counter.)
put somebody off (doing something) means cause somebody not to want something or to do something (e.g. We wanted to go to the exhibition, but we were put off by the long queue)
put something off means postpone (e.g. We are putting off our trip until January because of the hurricane.)
put something off, put off doing something = delay it (e.g. We can't put off making a decision. We have to decide now)
