Everyday Problem

A. Things that go wrong in houses:
1. The lights are not working: there must be a power cut.
2. The door-handle’s come off
3. The wash machine broke down the other day. I’ll have to do the laundry by hand.

4. Oh no! The bathroom’s flooded. Get a mop, quick!
5. The batteries have run out/ are dead. I’ll have to get some more.
6. Oh dear! This chair’s broken. I wonder how that happened.
7. I’m sorry, your cup’s chipped.

B. Everyday minor injuries:
1. She twisted her ankle coming down the stairs.
2. I cut my finger while I was slicing potatoes.
3. I bumped/ banged my head on the cupboard door and got a bruise.

C. Other everyday problems:
1. I’ve mislaid mom’s letter. (mislaid: put it somewhere and can’t find it.)
2. I hope it doesn’t stain. (stain: leave a permanent mark)
3. The sink is blocked. (block: the water will not drain)
4. I’m afraid I’ve dented your car. (dent: bent the metal a little bit by hitting something)
5. I’ve locked myself out. Can I use your phone to ring my wife?
