Possessive

A. Possessives Nouns
A1. We use a noun with ’s with a singular noun to show possession.

A2. use s’ with a plural noun ending in s.
A3. But we use ’s with other plural nouns. (e.g. men’s shoes.)
A4. can use a possessive instead of a noun phrase to avoid repeating words. (e.g. Is that John’s car? No, it’s Mary’s (car).)

B. Possessives Adjectives
B1. to show something belongs to somebody

B2. for relations and friends.
B3. for parts of the body.

C. Possessives Pronouns
C1. We can use a possessive pronoun instead of a noun phrase.

C2. We can use possessive pronouns after of. We can say:
– Ann is one of my friends. or Ann is a friend of mine. But not Ann is a friend of me. or
– I am one of Ann’s friends. or I am a friend of Ann’s. But not I am a friend of Ann.

D. We use whose to ask questions: Whose coat is this? or Whose is this coat?
