Verb

A. A Verb is a word used to describe an action, state, or occurrence, and forming the main part of the predicate of a sentence. (e.g. hear, become, happen)

A1. The verb be is used in the following patterns:
a. with a noun (e.g. My mother is a teacher. Bill Clinton was the president of the US.)
b. with an adjective. (e.g. This soup is very tasty. The children were good.)
c. with the ‘-ing’ form to make the continuous aspect. (e.g. We were walking down the street. Everything was wet. It had been raining for hours.)
d. with the ‘-ed’ form to make the passive voice. (e.g. The house was built in 1890. The street is called Montagu Street. This car was made in Korea.)
e. with a prepositional phrase. (e.g. John and his wife are from Manchester. The flowers are on the table.)
