Global Problems

A. Disasters/ Tragedies:
1. Earthquake: the earth moves/ trebles (e.g. A big earthquake shook the city at noon today.)
2. Drought: no rain (e.g. The area is suffering its worst drought for many years.)
3. Explosion: a bomb (e.g. The explosion resulted in 300 casualties.)
4. Hurricane/ tornado/ typhoon: violent winds/ storms (e.g. A tornado swept through the islands yesterday.)
5. Volcano: hot liquid rock and gases pour from a mountain (e.g. A volcano has erupted in Indonesia)
6. Famine: no food (e.g. Millions are starving as a result of the famine.)
7. Flood: too much rain
8. Epidemic: diseases affecting large numbers of people (e.g. The flu epidemic spread rapidly throughout the country.)

B. Words for people involved in disasters/ tragedies:
1. Casualty: dead and injured people
2. Victim: people who suffer the result
3. Survivor: people who live through a disaster
4. Wounded: injured in a battle or by a weapon
